The New Palestine girls basketball team won its third straight game Thursday, beating Eastern Hancock 38-37 in a close tilt at NPHS.
The Dragons built a 20-11 halftime lead, but EH opened the second half with a 16-2 run to take a 27-22 edge late in the third. Haley Stratman made a 3-pointer and a basket and Carly Hackler had a free throw and a basket, Emma Laughlin an inside shot and Raegan McMurray two free throws to key a 12-1 spurt that put NP up 34-28 with 2:30 left. EH continued to battle back as the Royals fouled and forced a pair of late turnovers, but two stops with the Dragons up 36-34 in the final 10 seconds, and two free throws by McMurray with 5.8 ticks left gave the Dragons enough of a lead to hold off EH, which hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to set the final margin.
McMurray had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She also had four assists and three steals for a strong all-around game. Stratman also added 13 points, hitting three 3-pointers and grabbing five rebounds. She also blocked a shot. Hackler had six points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists. Gia Nitschke had four points and two steals, and Emma Laughlin had two points and five steals.
The Dragons held EH to 31 percent shooting (13-41) and outrebounded the Royals 25-21.
