The New Palestine girls basketball team spent much of the afternoon rallying from an early nine-point deficit, but eventually fell 45-34 to the Pendleton Heights Arabians.
NP held the Arabians to just 25 percent shooting (4-of-16) from the floor in the second half, but PH was 16-of-23 from the foul line, including 10-of-15 after halftime, while the Dragons were 7-of-9 from the stripe, 4-of-6 after halftime.
The Dragons trailed by nine late in the first quarter, but a 3-pointer and a long 2-pointer by Haley Stratman helped cut the deficit to 19-14 by the end of the period. NP trailed 27-20 at halftime, but started the second half on a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to three, at 29-26, and outscored PH 8-4 in the period. The Arabians used strong foul shooting in the fourth to turn what was a 31-28 game after three into the 45-34 final margin.
Raegan McMurray led the Dragons with a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She also had three assists and four steals. Stratman had nine points. Gia Nitschke added four points and three steals. Carly Hackler had seven rebounds, two blocked shots and four steals.
The Dragons (6-7, 3-4 HHC) next play on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Guerin Catholic. The JV game tips at 6 p.m., with varsity to follow.
PH won the JV game 41-24.
