The New Palestine girls basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from Shelbyville in a 48-31 road victory Tuesday night.
New Palestine outscored the host Golden Bears 18-4 in the final period, and 32-12 in the second half.
The Dragons got strong all-around games from throughout the lineup. Senior guard Emma Laughlin scored 18 points, including 12-of-15 from the line. She had three assists, five rebounds and six steals in the win. Sophomore guard Raegan McMurray had 13 points, hitting 7-of-8 from the line, seven rebounds , two assists and three steals. Junior Haley Stratman hit two big 3-pointers in the second half, and also had seven boards and two blocked shots. Junior Carly Hackler also had seven rebounds. Senior Gia Nitschke had six points, two rebounds and two assists.
The Dragons hit 22-of-27 from the line in the game, including 16-of-19 in the second half. They held Shelbyville to just 19 percent shooting (4-21) in the second half and 25 percent (10-40) for the game.
The victory marked the third straight game the Dragons have held an opponent to 35 points or less.
The Dragons (3-4, 2-1 HHC) next play Friday against Greenfield-Central in the first half of a boys/girls doubleheader. Tipoff is 6 p.m. Dragon Radio will have the broadcast.
