The New Palestine girls basketball team dropped a tough 35-33 decision to New Castle Tuesday night in the Dragons’ HHC opener.
The Dragons rallied from an early six-point deficit to take the lead in the late stages on a Raegan McMurray basket, putting the Dragons up 29-28. She later hit a free throw, putting the Dragons up 30-29. Gia Nitschke added a three-point play to put the Dragons up four, but New Castle hit a banked-in 3-pointer in the final minute and the Trojans got back-to-back steals and turned them into a game-winning three-point play with 10 seconds left.
McMurray led the Dragons with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. She also had three steals. Gia Nitschke had seven points, three rebounds and two steals. Emma Laughlin ahd six points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Haley Stratman added six points. Carly Hackler had two points, two assists and five boards.
The Dragons are now 1-4 and 0-1 in HHC play. They next play Saturday at Delta.
