The New Palestine boys tennis team posted a 5-0 sweep of Mt. Vernon Tuesday to clinch second place in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.
The Dragons are now 14-1 overall and have won 12 straight matches. They finish the HHC season with a 6-1 mark and finish as runners-up to Delta.
Winners were Brent Barrett (6-0, 6-2), Jake Purcell (4-6, 6-4, 10-7), and Coltin Espich (6-4, 2-6, 10-6 at singles). At doubles, Ben Farley/David Thompson (6-3, 6-1) and Josh McKinney/Evan Rejer (6-0, 6-1) were winners. The teams played super-tiebreakers in lieu of third sets with matches already decided.
“We still have some work to do. We’re still not firing on all cylinders,” coach Chris Hardin said. “We weren’t focused the way we need to be, especially against a future sectional opponent. We have a couple of matches between now and sectional, so hopefully, we’ll continue to make some improvements.”
The Dragons next play Thursday at Chatard.
The Dragon JV won 4-2.
