The New Palestine football team started the 2014 season strong with a dominant scrimmage performance against the Scecina Crusaders.
While no official score was kept, the Dragons scored 10 touchdowns in their allotted 51 plays, and allowed Scecina only one. The varsity offense had eight touchdowns, and the JV offense had two.
In addition, NP’s defense forced six turnovers — including three each by the varsity and JV.
Offensively, the Dragons varsity outgained the Crusaders 286-28. Sterling Curran had 101 yards rushing and a touchdown on five carries. James Young, a returning 1,000-yard rusher, had 10 carries for 71 yards and two scores. QBs Alex Neligh and Chaz Hill both threw well. Neleigh completed 4-of-7 passes for 49 yards and three TDs, while Hill completed 3-of-4 for 33 yards and two scores.
Adam Kincaid caught three passes for 38 yards and two TDs to lead the receiving corps. Joe Izbicki, Noah Grable and Jeff Wilcher also had TD receptions.
In the two JV segments, Gunnar Large ran for a TD and threw for one to lead the Dragons to two more TDs.
Meanwhile, the Dragon varsity defense produced 10 loss-yardage plays, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in 35 snaps, and the JV defense had an interception and two fumble recoveries.
The Dragons open the 2014 season Friday, Aug. 22 at Kelso Stadium against Danville. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Broadcast will be on Dragon Radio.
