Softball blasts New Castle

The New Palestine softball team scored in all four of its at-bats Tuesday to beat conference foe New Castle 15-0 in five innings. The Dragons improved to 8-0 on the season and 4-0 in conference play with the victory. The Dragons tallied eight extra-base hits, including homers by Maddie Engle, Katie Hirschy and Allie Blum. Hirschy also tripled and drove in five runs, going 3-for-3 on the day. Blum was also 3-for-3 with four runs, a double and an RBI. Nyla Lewis was 2-for-3 with a triple, a run and two RBI. Paige Ernstes hit a triple, scored twice and drove in two. Payton Dye, Sydney Oliver, Engle, Reese Rosenbaum, Ella Holman and Kylee Beranek also had hits for the Dragons. Three Dragons pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout, with Courtney Study getting the win. She fanned five in 2 1/3 innings, allowing three hits. Cailyn Hurst allowed one hit and fanned four in 1 2/3 innings, while Sadey Hughbanks fanned two in one hitless inning. The Dragons scored five in the first, with Hirschy's bases-clearing triple giving NP a 3-0 lead. Rosenbaum and Lewis followed with RBI hits. NP extended the lead to 8-0 in the second, as Blum doubled and scored on Oliver's sacrifice fly to plate one run. Hirschy and Engle then hit back-to-back solo homers. The Dragons added six runs in the third, beginning with Beranek and Lewis hitting back-to-back triples to lead off the frame. Dye's single plated a second run. Oliver followed with an RBI single, Ernstes a two-run triple and Hirschy an RBI single to put NP up 14-0. A solo homer by Blum in the fourth plated another run. The Dragons are next in action Wednesday at Center Grove.
